MediaAcT research consortium meets in Dortmund

In February, the MediaAcT research consortium met in Dortmund University's Erich Brost Institute for the project's inauguration workshop. For four days, 31 researchers from 13 countries discussed the status of media self-regulation and accountability, thus creating a basis for their joint research efforts. The kick-off meeting left all participants very happy for being part of an innovative cross-cultural project, but, at the same time, it also demonstrated that there are still considerable desiderata in the field of media accountability studies.

Preparations for the MediaAcT kick-off meeting

The preparations for the inaugural MediaAcT workshop are coming to an end. On February 18th, 2010, about 30 researchers from 13 countries will meet in the Erich Brost Institute for a kick-off meeting that will lay the foundation for the project's tasks and objectives. The consortium partners will stay in Dortmund for four days in order to discuss current questions of media accountability - and to plan their research agenda for the coming 3 1/2 years. The Inauguration Workshop starts with a panel discussion on media ethics in the digital age.

MediaAcT project website online

The MediaAcT project has a new home in the Internet. The website mediaact.eu combines current news from the research team with background information on MediaAcT's concept and objectives. It also contains a comprehensive literature database referring to publications on media accountability and collects links to other useful Internet resources focusing on media ethics and self-regulation. An integrated wiki is supposed to provide the international MediaAcT researchers with a platform for the internal documentation of the project's progress.

Panel discussion: "Wild west in the WWW?"

For the journalistic profession, the possibilities of online communication are a constant source of innovation. At the same time, the digital revolution is accompanied by wide-ranging ethical challenges that journalists have to face. What are the typical conflicts of journalism in the digital age? Are the traditional institutions of media self-regulation ready for these new challenges? These and other questions will be analyzed by distinguished international speakers in a public panel discussion at the Erich Brost Institute on February 18th, 2010.
