Brief description of the legal entity

The Faculty of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies was established in January 1990 as a department of the University of Bucharest. During its 20 years of existence, the school’s professors aligned the titles and content of courses to contemporary western academic tendencies, respecting both the practical and the cultural side of journalism education. Among students and graduates, FJSC has many of the leading figures in the media industry and communication professionals in the Romanian commercial firms or governmental bodies. The FJSC was granted with the Order of Cultural Merit, Romania’s highest civilian award, in 2009 for its contribution to the development of journalism education in Romania. The research interests, done with the financial support ranging from Tempus, Leonardo da Vinci, EU’s FP programmes to the Romanian government, include subjects such as media in transition, media economics, media training, communication management and public opinion in the European context, industry training assessment and industry evolution diagnose. In the last years, the faculty was involved in European programmes such as “Adequate Information Management” (AIM), EUMESTA, “Trimedial” and „Enhancement and development of the professional expertise of the Romanian audio-visual sector”.

Main tasks/previous experience relevant to those tasks

The Romanian team lead by Mihai Coman is experienced with the training of journalists and media managers; among its alumni are leading figures of the media industry. Therefore, Coman’s team will develop the training manual and online tool for future journalists and organise the workshop with media managers on MAS. Being well versed with international research processes, the Romanian partner also develops the methodological design and instruments to measure the different ranges of media accountability. Coman’s expert knowledge about media in transition, will also contribute well to the project’s interest.

Short profile of the staff member

Mihai Coman, PhD, was the first Dean of the School of Journalism and Mass Communication studies within the University of Bucharest, being considered the founder of journalism and communication education in Romania. In 2009 he was granted the Order of Cultural Merit, Romania’s highest civilian award, for his contribution to the development of journalism and communication education in Romania. Until 1989 he had specialized in cultural anthropology studies on Romanian folklore. He has published four volumes of mythology studies and a vast synthesis on animal mythology (Bestiarul mitologic roman, 1986, 1988, second edition published in 1996). Other mythology studies have appeared in scientific journals L’Ethnologie francaise, Etudes indo-europeennes, Kurier. After 1989 he published the reference volume Introducere in sistemul mass media and he has started to elaborate the theoretical and analitical framework of the mass media anthropology. In 2003, as a synthesis of these investigations, he published with Presses Universitaires de Grenoble the book Pour une anthropologie des medias, and in 2005 he co-edited (with Eric Rothenbuhler) the pathbreaking reader Media Anthropology at Sage Publ. He has also published numerous scientific studies in journals and collective volumes dedicated to the transformations in the mass media in post-communist countries and the books Media in Romania (A Sourcebook), Berlin, Vistas Verlang, 2004, and Mass Media and Journalism in Romania (with Peter Gross), Vistas, Berlin, 2006. He was director of different European and Romania research grants: 1999 – 2000 – Director Grant 5 of World Bank and Romanian Government “The management of media institutions” (80,000 USD); 2004 – 2006 – Director (for Romania) of TRIMEDIAL Projekt Nr. Raluca Radu, PhD, has an academic background in journalism, communication studies and management. Her research and teaching focus on communication ethics, media management and cultural industries. Raluca Radu was part of several national and international research and consultancy projects interested in digitalisation and multi-platform newsrooms, European issues in national media, cinematography, and intellectual capital, both as a researcher and as a project administrator.

Manuela Preoteasa has been a journalist with the online media for almost 10 years now. She is also assistant lecturer with the Faculty of Journalism and Communication Studies at the University of Bucharest and a media researcher with the Center of Independent Journalism (CJI) in Bucharest. A former Marshal Memorial Fellow in 2006, Manuela Preoteasa authored several studies on media. They include "Romania: two television networks, two different realities," which was published in "Indicator of Public Interest: TV Prime Time Domestic News – Monitoring and analysis of TV news in ten SEENPM countries" (Media Plan Institute, Sarajevo, September 2007); and the chapter on Romania in Media markets in "SEE and EU accession countries – Media ownership patterns and their effects on media freedom and pluralism" (Mirovni Institute, Ljubljana, SEENPM network, 2004). She was also the editor of "Media: Business Ethics, Ethics of Business", published by the CJI in 2006. A founder of the Association of Online Press Editors, Manuela Preoteasa also worked as a journalist with the national TV station Antena 1 and the business weekly Capital.

Cristina Coman, Ph.D. is teaching Desk Top Publishing and Layout, Media Relations and Public Relations. She has done researchers at University Paul Valery, Montpellier (France), College of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of South Carolina (USA), Universite Libre de Bruxellex (Belgium) and Ecole Superieure de Journalisme, Lille (France). Her main publications are: "Desk Top Publishing: General Principles" (1992), “Media Relations” (2000, second edition – 2004), “Public Relations – Principles and Strategies” (2002), ”Theoretical Models in Public Relations” (2009) and ”Crisis Communication” (2009). Cristina Coman was member of the grant team „The Romanian Printed Press Coverage of the Romanian Integration in EU ” (2005- 2005) and was coordinator for Romania of the grant FP6 – Enhancement and Development of the Professional Expertise of the Romanian Audio-Visual Sector, PHARE 2004/016-772.03.15 (2006-2008). She is director for Romania of the grant ”Creation: Corporate Responsibility Education and Training: Innovative Operative Notions” - VS/2008/0355 European Commission – Employment Social Affairs and Equal Opportunity DG - with The Italian Center for Social Responsibility, Luigi Clerici Foundation, Italia, Business to Business, UK and CSDR Romania (2008 – 2010)and director of the grant 958 financed by The National Council for Scientific Research: “Adapting the educational programs in public relations to the demands of professional environment: Bologna process and the list of professional qualifications” (2009 – 2011). Cristina Coman is international member of AEJMC – Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, and founder member of The Romanian Association of Educators in Journalism and Communication and of The Romanian Association of Public Relations. She has has a M.A. at The Systems and Computer Science Faculty, The Polytechnic University, Bucharest (1978) and a Ph. D. at Bucharest University in sociology (1996).

Mihaela Păun has studied journalism and mass communication at the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies (2003) and got her MA in “Management of Media Institutions” from the University of Bucharest (2005). She also attended the training programs “Project Management” and “Management of a public image”, conducted by the National Institute of Administration Romania.

As a PhD student of the Doctoral School in Communication Sciences (School of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies), Mihaela participated in the research projects “Adequate Information Management in Europe” (AIM), Sixth Framework Programme, Priority 7, CORDIS, and “Patterns of media consumption in Romanian rural world: traditional identity, European identity”, the IDEI Grant funded by the University of Bucharest. She also was an exchange PhD student in the Erasmus program at the Université Catholique de Louvain, Belgium, Département de communication (2007).

Mihaela Păun worked as public relations specialist and reporter for Transparency International Romania, Ministry of Education, Research and Youth Romania and Romania’s first institutional communications agency, Ars Advertising). Collaborates with School of Journalism and Mass Communication since 2005, as a teacher associate, and currently is an assistant professor. Her fields of teaching are information gathering techniques, mass media writing techniques, public relations techniques and mass media systems.

Horea Mihai Badau ( has graduated from the School of Journalism and Mass Communication Studies within the University of Bucarest (1998) and holds a Master in Mass Communication Studies (1999). He is an Assistant Professor (he teaches Ethics courses) and he is a Phd Student in Mass Communication Studies (Self-image of journalists). He worked in the Romanian press for 12 years as Editor and as Editor-in-chief at Realitatea TV, television news number one in Romania (2002-2006). He was also a radio talk show’s moderator and producer at Radio France Internationale Romania. The main themes of the show were about media self-regulations and news treatment (2000-2004). He was the Project manager and the Editor-en-chief of the news portal owned by the biggest press trust in Romania: Mediapro (2000-2002). He worked also at Antena1 television in the marketing department (1995-1996), he was a investigative reporter at Tineretul Liber (1993-1994) and a reporter at Radio Delta RFI in 1992-1993. He is the Founder and the President of the Consumers Media Association who represents the voice of the media readers (2005-present days). He organised public debats on media regulations, with top journalists, top politicians, representatives of professional associations and formers presidents of Romania (2007-2009). The Association made The Declaration of Media Consumers Rights founded on Media Regulations and organised several public campaigns to protect it. The Media Consumers Association participed at the development of the Law on Radio and Television Broadcasting, signed a protocol with National Audiovisual Council of Romania and is a member of Media Convention grouping 40 associations of journalists.
